UEFA Champions League 2023–2024: Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory dashes Manchester United’s hopes of winning the UCL

<p>Manchester United’s hopes of making it to the round of sixteen were dashed in a pivotal Champions League match at Old Trafford when they lost 1-0 to group winners Bayern Munich. The defeat compounded United’s problems during Erik ten Hag’s turbulent season.</p>

<p>In order to advance from their group stage, Manchester United needed to defeat Bayern Munich and hoped for a draw against Galatasaray in Copenhagen. To their dismay, none of the two scenarios came to pass as Kingsley Coman scored the game’s winning goal from close range in the 70th minute.</p>
<p>With no defender guarding him, Coman scored easily as he found clear space inside United’s penalty area. The Frenchman’s goal was made possible by Harry Kane’s clever flip assist, which allowed him to shoot the ball past goalkeeper Andre Onana with ease.</p>
<p>Manchester United finished in fourth place after the loss, with only four points, and they were not even guaranteed a Europa League playoff spot. As the final whistle blew, irate home fans erupted in booing throughout Old Trafford.</p>
<p>This became United’s sixth consecutive group stage elimination, their first since the 2020–21 campaign, and just their second group bottom finish—the first being in the 2005–06 season.</p>
<p>The Red Devils’ night of despair continued as central defender Harry Maguire left the game in the 40th minute with a groin injury.</p>
<p>Bayern had a successful outcome, finishing Group A with an outstanding 16 points from six games. The draw for their next Champions League opponents will take place on Monday.</p>
