Delhi Metro: Rapid Rail Integration With Sahibabad’s Blue Line Extension

A new route plan for the Blue Line expansion from Noida Electronic City has been presented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which integrates the final planned stop at Sahibabad with the current Rapid Rail station.

The Times of India has published an exclusive piece that provides specifics on the project, which intends to improve multi-modal connectivity.

The Sahibabad metro station would be positioned in Vasundhara diagonally from the existing Sahibabad Rapid Rail station, according to the DMRC study. A foot overbridge that connects the two stations—which are located on opposite sides of the Link Road—will enable travelers to switch between the Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail corridor and the Blue Line without having to leave the property.

DMRC first proposed extending the Blue Line to Sahibabad in 2018, and since then, the idea has undergone many cost-cutting changes. As the Rapid Rail alignment construction advanced, it became necessary to integrate the Sahibabad metro station with the system.

The Ghaziabad Development Authority’s chief engineer, Manvendra Singh, underlined the need of multi-modal integration. He said, “The Namo Bharat station on the other side of Link Road will be integrated with the 5.2km metro route, which will culminate at Sahibabad.”

According to the DMRC study, the planned metro route would pass through Indirapuram and Vasundhara and have five stops. Vaibhav Khand, Shakti Khand, DPS Indirapuram, Vasundhara Sector 5, and Sahibabad are a few of these stations. With pillars placed along road medians, the elevated path will do away with the need for property purchase.

The Blue Line’s other segment, which runs from Dwarka to Vaishali, would also link to the Delhi Rapid Rail system at Anand Vihar. On the same Link Road as the Sahibabad station of the Rapid Rail, the Vaishali station is well situated close by.

In order to cover the anticipated expenditure of Rs. 1,517 crore, the government of Uttar Pradesh has devised a cost-sharing scheme. As per the agreement, the Ghaziabad Development Authority and the Housing Board would split the state’s share of the funding evenly, with the state providing eighty percent of the funds via its agencies. The federal government will provide the last 20% of the funding.

The metro extension’s work has previously been hampered by disagreements over fund-sharing. The project’s original budget called for the UP government to pay for half of it, the Center for another twenty percent, and other agencies for the last thirty percent. However, the state administration disapproved of this proposal.

According to Singh, the Ghaziabad Development Authority is considering borrowing money from the NCR Planning Board to finance its portion of the project due to a financial shortage. The National Capital Region’s transportation infrastructure and connections are intended to be strengthened by the updated and integrated metro expansion plan.
