<p>Over the last 20 years, there has been a notable increase in the number of women entrepreneurs in India who are breaking gender stereotypes and prospering in a range of economic areas. An excellent example of this is Mrs. Rajni Bector, who founded Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialities Limited with a little investment of Rs. 20,000. Since then, she has become one of the most prosperous people in the FMCG sector. In January 2021, the Indian government bestowed the Padma Shri Award to her in recognition of her remarkable entrepreneurial career.</p>

<p>With little money but a lot of ambition, Rajni Bector, the founder of well-known Indian companies including English Oven and Cremica, started her entrepreneurial career. As of 2023, the market value of her parent business, Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialities Limited, is estimated to be Rs 6681 crore. Rajni, who was born in 1940 in Karachi, Pakistan, migrated to Delhi after the partition. She was married when she was seventeen and relocated to Ludhiana, where her husband was in charge of the family company. Having never worked in the food sector before, Rajni started off by producing and selling ice cream from her residence in Ludhiana. Her efforts paid off when she launched English Oven and Cremica. Later, she ventured out into selling biscuits and other culinary goods. Her narrative offers inspiration to would-be business owners who believe that financial gain takes precedence over personal fulfillment. Rajni Bector’s ice cream company had a huge boost in 1989—it baked 50,000 loaves in a single day—despite intense rivalry from other companies in the industry.</p>
<p>Even as Rajni Bector’s bakery grew, her husband Dharamvir Bector’s family company was also prospering. However, in 1984, the Bector family began getting death threats during the anti-Sikh riots that ensued after the murder of Indira Gandhi, the former prime minister of India.</p>
<p>Rajni Bector, a housewife, decided to follow her love for baking when her three boys went off to boarding school. She enrolled in Punjab Agricultural University’s baking degree and started experimenting with different meals. In order to keep up with demand, Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialities Limited was selected by McDonald’s as a long-term bun supplier in 1996. Rajni Bector developed many sites around the country and constructed a production plant in Greater Noida to accommodate this demand. Her firm went public in 2020.</p>
